Four officials of a company involved in organising rock band Metallica’s maiden concert in India have been arrested on charges of cheating even as the event by the celebrated American heavy metal band has been cancelled on “security grounds”.
Hours after the concert failed to take off as scheduled on Friday night and triggered chaos at the Leisure Valley venue with fans going berserk, police arrested four persons belonging to DNA network, the event management company looking after the show.
They were arrested under sections 406 (breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, police said.
Those arrested include Ashok, Rajesh, Savia Faleio and Umesh.
The company said, “The band was notified that there was a serious question as to whether the show could proceed with regard to the safety of the concert audience”.
In view of the security considerations, Metallica could not play in Delhi.
“DNA Networks, and Metallica determined that there was a failure of a security barricade in front of the stage that could not be adequately repaired, they reluctantly announced the postponement of the show until Saturday,” the company said in a release.
“Unfortunately, on such short notice the promoters were unable to secure a permit for a show on Saturday, therefore DNA announced that Metallica would not be able to play in Delhi,” it said.
DNA networks said it will be soon issuing a notification as regards to refunds.
“Within the next 24 hours a notification will be issued by DNA Networks regarding the process for full refunds. Metallica is deeply disappointed with this news and will continue to send updates as additional details are determined and confirmed,” it said.
Thousands of fans were on Friday left disappointed after organisers had announced postponement citing “technical” problems.
“F1 Rocks and Metallica regret to announce that due to technical difficulties the Metallica show at Gurgaon has been postponed until Saturday,” a statement by the group had said.
The statement said the group, considered the gods of rock, apologised for any inconvenience caused.
Hundreds of fans including from outside the National Capital Region (NCR) had gathered in large numbers at the venue several hours before the concert was scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night.
After the news of postponement was announced on stage, disappointed fans tried to vandalise the venue. They broke barriers, climbed onto the stage and tore posters.
Fans waited with bated breath to hear the band belt out their biggest hits from ‘Nothing Else Matters’ and ‘Enter Sandman’ to ‘One’ and ‘Seek and Destroy’
Metallica is in India to coincide with Formula One making its beginning for the first time in India. They are due to perform in Bangalore on Sunday.
The 125th birth anniversary of the iconic Statue of Liberty was celebrated here with events including a gun salute, fireworks and naturalisation ceremony for 125 immigrants organised to commemorate the day.
Noted singer and pianist Michael Feinstein, Academy-Award-nominated actress Sigourney Weaver and vocalist Capathia Jenkins were among the celebrities who joined New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar for the ceremony held yesterday.
The theme for the 125th anniversary events is ‘Honour History, Envision the Future.’ Through the various ceremonies, the National Park Service intended to re-create the actual programme of the day the statue was gifted to the US by France.
“She remains an inspiration for people all around the world,” Bloomberg said.
A small flotilla of government, commercial and private vessels offered a salute to the Statue at the close of the ceremony, evoking the 1886 “water parade” that attended her dedication. Honouring her status as a symbol of enduring hope and welcome to the millions of immigrants who have entered the US, 125 immigrants took the oath of allegiance on Liberty Island becoming new US citizens.
The iconic green lady, a gift from France to the United States, was dedicated on October 28, 1886 and designated as a National Monument in 1924. More than 1,000 people from both the countries were present on the occasion on Liberty Island in New York Harbour.
A series of new web cameras have also been placed around the torch of the Statue of Liberty, providing on computers and smart phones live and unobstructed views of the New York City skyline, the Hudson River, ships in New York Harbour as well as a wide-angle interactive view of the famed golden torch.
“Lady Liberty is an enduring symbol of freedom, tolerance and openness that represents our country’s highest ideals,” Salazar said.
During the ceremony, American and French national anthems were played, followed by Weaver reading “The New Colossus,” a poem by Emma Lazarus inscribed under the statue in bronze.
The iconic New York symbol will close for a year beginning on Friday, during when a $ 27.25 million renovation will be undertaken to improve the stairway up into Lady Liberty’s crown and to add new safety equipments.
However, Liberty Island, where the copper statue is located, will remain open during the project and views of Lady Liberty will remain largely unobstructed during the year-long upgrade.
Seeking investments from Qatar in the upcoming petrochemical projects being executed by public sector companies, Petroleum and National Gas Minister Jaipal Reddy on Friday sought additional quantities of crude oil and LNG from Qatar.
Mr. Reddy was speaking at a meeting with Minister for Industry and Energy of Qatar Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sada here. He emphasised that such investments from Qatar would be a win-win proposition for both countries as India was looking for strategic investors for some of these project that included petrochemical complexes at Dahej and Manglore and LNG import terminal at Ennore, according to an official statement issued here.
Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Saba reiterated Qatar's commitment to India not only to supply LNG under the existing contracts but also to provide additional quantities for which discussions were now going on. He offered to supply LPG and crude oil condensates, which could be processed to produce white fuels such as petrol, kerosene, ATF and naphtha.
The two ministers stressed the need for expediting the process of evaluating the present opportunities for mutual cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector. Mr. Reddy expressed the hope that some of these deals would near fruition at the time of the World Petroleum Congress at Doha in December this year.
This image provided by NASA TV shows the liftoff of the Delta II rocket with its NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP) spacecraft payload is seen shortly after the launch on Friday.
An Earth-observing satellite has been launched on a dual mission to improve weather forecasts and monitor climate change.
A Delta 2 rocket carrying the NASA satellite blasted off shortly before 3 a.m. Friday from the central California coast. The space agency invited a small group of Twitter followers to watch the liftoff up close.
The path to the launch pad has been bumpy. The satellite was supposed to fly in 2006, but problems developing the instruments forced a five-year delay.
The $1.5 billion mission is intended to be a bridge between the current aging satellites and a new generation to be launched in a few years.

Justice G.N. Ray, Chairman, Press Council of India. said in his inaugural address that Small and medium newspapers have no substitute, because being at grass roots level, they are closer to the people. As such, their domain is impenetrable as the big newspapers and TV channels are primarily urban oriented. Therefore, the small newspapers should not bother about competition. Without being over sensitive towards circulation, they should rather compete with them selves only, not with the big papers. Concentrating on content quality, they should try to become the voice of the people in rural and remote areas, where being sons of soil they enjoy better access than the socalled big papers do. He presented the report of council’s sub committee for small and medium newspapers, in which council recommended to not charged 15% commission from advertisements of davp and to give 20% more then davp rate from state governments.

We may take ours for granted, but atmospheres are responsible for creating some of the wonders of the Solar System.
The flimsy, thin blue line seen from space that surrounds Earth makes it a wonderfully diverse place.
Huygens image of Titan (Nasa/Esa)
There were few people who disputed the interpretation of a river channel. There really wasn't very much doubt
Dr Ralph Lorenz, Huygens project scientist
Our atmosphere's unique chemical formula supplies us with the air we breathe, the water that bathes us and provides a soothing blanket that keeps us protected from the violence of space.
And where there are other atmospheres, there are other wonders.
Travel away from Earth at the speed of light for half an hour and you would enter the frozen realm of the outer Solar System.
Out here are planets that are nothing but atmosphere - unimaginably vast balls of churning gas and ice. These are alien, chaotic worlds with storms large enough to swallow Earth three times over and winds screaming across their surface at nearly the speed of sound.
Yet it is also out here amongst these alien planets that we have discovered a world that holds a striking resemblance to Earth. A moon orbiting Saturn called Titan.
When Titan was first discovered, it was thought to be the largest moon in the Solar System, but then astronomers realised their mistake.
At first they had not understood that this moon was unique. It had an atmosphere - a thick, dense orange haze, 10 times as deep as the Earth's atmosphere.
This made Titan look far larger than it really was.
Just like home
When they analysed this mysterious atmosphere, astronomers found that the chemical make-up was the most Earth-like in the Solar System, with plenty of nitrogen and a smattering of methane.
But, if this atmosphere is so similar to ours, what about the world it obscures? Our view of Titan sharpened with the arrival of the Cassini spacecraft, which has been performing a measured dance around Saturn and its moons since June 2004.
Ligeia Mare (Nasa)
Ligeia Mare (sea) covers about 100,000 sq km in Titan's high north
On Christmas Day of that year, the European Space Agency probe Huygens detached itself from Cassini and began a slow descent to the surface of Titan.
"It was amazing because we just had no idea what to expect," says Huygens project scientist Dr Ralph Lorenz. "We didn't know if it would be cratered like the moon, or a flat expanse of sand. And then the first pictures came back and it was just astonishingly familiar."
As it descended through the smog, Huygens captured images of a craggy, rocky-looking landscape. The images of its landing site was even more startling - it appeared to have settled on a gravelly plain, dotted with smooth, rounded stones.
According to Dr Lorenz, it was clear what these pictures meant: "There were few people who disputed the interpretation of a river channel. There really wasn't very much doubt."
Finding a river bed on a moon was an extraordinary discovery. By peeking through Titan's hydrocarbon shroud, we had revealed a world familiar to our eyes; a landscape sculpted by flowing liquid, just as the rain, rivers, and seas sculpt the surface of our planet.
Professor Brian Cox in the Matanuska glacier region of Alaska
The Matanuska glacier region of Alaska shows how water sculpts a landscape

Yet Titan's surface temperature is -180C, far too cold for liquid water to exist. Some other liquid was carving out the features on this moon.
To bring this story to life, the team from BBC Two's Wonders of the Solar System series spent long days poring over images, staring at endless vistas. Finally, they landed on the stunning Matanuska Glacier region of Alaska.
The series presenter Professor Brian Cox explains: "It's an immensely beautiful landscape but the important thing about this region is you can see how water, whether liquid or solid has sculpted the landscape - we were surrounded by landscape completely dominated by water.
"And on Titan you would see a landscape that is exactly the same. Yet it's not carved by water. It's too cold."
The reason sublime landscapes like the Matanuska Glacier exist is because of a delicate balance of temperature and pressure. Our planet is at just the right temperature and atmospheric pressure to allow water to exist as ice, liquid water, and water vapour.
Titan with a glistening lake at its pole
Titan seen as sunlight glistens in one of its methane pools
Just as the conditions here allow water to exist in all three states, the conditions on Titan are perfectly balanced to allow methane to exist as a liquid, a solid and a gas.
On Titan, methane plays exactly the same role water plays here on Earth. Where we have clouds of water vapour, Titan has clouds of methane with methane rain.
Where we have lakes and oceans of water, Titan has lakes of methane.
Titan is the only place beyond Earth where we've found liquid pooling on the surface in enormous quantities, as big as the Caspian Sea. This moon is bathed in fuel.
Alaska was a perfect place to envision this bizarre moon. Craggy mountains covered in ice and snow, the brittle rugged surface of the glacier, rivers grinding away at pebbles and tranquil lakes. All have their twin on Titan.
"The best locations in the series really transport you to the wonders we are talking about. And Alaska was one of the best of them all, and one of the most beautiful places I have been," says Professor Cox.
Titan is a true wonder of the Solar System. It's like staring back in time four billion years and seeing the Earth as it was before life began.
Haitian-born actor Jimmy Jean-Louis of the popular NBC series 'Heroes' at the 'Sustainable Haiti' conference in Miami, 18 Mar 2010

A year-and-a-half ago, Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) asked Haitian-born actor, Jimmy Jean-Louis to be its Goodwill Ambassador for children. Jean-Louis, is perhaps best known for his role as the "Haitian" in the NBC hit series "Heroes".  Independent, non-profit PADF has over 150 people all over Haiti working on projects such as protecting human rights, community-driven development and disaster relief. After January 12, PADF partnered with Hollywood Unites For Haiti, his own foundation.

As rewarding as the work has been, the actor is now on a personal mission to help rebuild the country where he was born and where he still has family.  An emotional Jean-Louis talked about the devastation he saw after the January 12 earthquake and during his subsequent visits back to his homeland.

"Right after the earthquake it was that sense of - I was happy to go back to my parents, because they were there, when the earthquake took place," Jean-Louis explains. His parents' home is located in Tabarre, just outside Port-au-Prince. Jean-Louis says his family is doing "good...better" after the earthquake.

"My parents lost their house, my sister lost her house - pretty much everybody lost whatever they had in Haiti. But it's just material," Jean-Louis notes. "I think everybody is in that same state."

Jimmy Jean-Louis didn't lose any close relatives on January 12 but he did lose some distant relatives. And his house collapsed, killing a 28-year-old man who was living there. After telling the story, the actor pauses to contemplate the tragedy of a young life lost so suddenly - there's sadness in his eyes.

Although he lives a somewhat charmed, Hollywood life, Jimmy Jean-Louis says he always enjoys going back to Haiti - even now.

"What goes through my mind when I go back to Haiti? It's always joy regardless of the situation. Even with the earthquake it's one place where I feel complete," he says. "I just feel being myself whenever I'm in Haiti."

Jean-Louis just got back from Haiti. Accompanying him were Dominican-born actress Dania Ramirez who also stars in "Heroes" and former National Basketball Association player Cliff Robinson. Robinson played for the New Jersey Nets until 2007.

Jean-Louis says what he saw was very painful. He mentions the St. Louis de Gonzague neighborhood that has become a "huge" tent city. People are living in very tight quarters he says.  The actor remembers thinking about those tent-dwellers while lying in bed at his home in Haiti on a rainy night. He says the area where the tent city is located is flat meaning a heavy rainfall floods their living quarters.

"It's heartbreaking to know that they're living under those conditions," an emotional Jean-Louis says. "Some of them don't even have any food the next day - or at least have some kind of ... comfort - so it's a really bad situation, it doesn't matter how you look at it. Now we have to find solutions."

Jimmy Jean-Louis hopes celebrities who travel to Haiti will keep the country in the news and on people's minds.

"Both of them [Dania Ramirez and Cliff Robinson] now are going to be able to reach out to a lot of people because they have a big network," Jean Louis says. Robinson has access to NBA fans while Ramirez also has many fans due to her appearance in the popular movie "X-Men".

But Jean-Louis hopes the involvement and visits by more Hollywood celebrities will keep attention on the country.

"If it's a question of having to do the effort without being pushed, they might not do it," he says. "[But] There are still a lot of people in Hollywood dedicated to the Haitian cause."  Jean-Louis cites actor Sean Penn who has spent a lot of time inside Haiti helping to rebuild and provide humanitarian assistance. Penn established a private Haiti relief foundation with a U.S. businesswoman.  He says movie director Paul Haggis has also taken many celebrities to Haiti during his visits. Among them: Josh Brolin, Diane Lane and Madeleine Stowe.

Asked whether he thinks the "Sustainable Haiti" conference discussion forums will have any impact in real terms on Haiti, the actor says he thinks change will happen. He also thinks it would be beneficial to organize a similar type of conference inside Haiti.

Stories on Haiti have significantly diminished in the press, more than two months after the devastating 7.0 earthquake. But Jimmy Jean-Louis hopes his effort as PADF ambassador and those pursued by his foundation, will make a difference.

"What I've been trying to do is keep that issue alive," he says. "We just have to keep reminding them, we have to. In America, in Asia, in Europe we have to keep Haiti on the map. We have to keep Haiti in the news, because otherwise we're not going to have the help that is necessary to do what we need to do to rebuild Haiti."

The actor says it will require money and constant attention and he's committed to making sure that happens.
Turkey rejects use of "genocide"

Roger Smith, a co-founder of the International Association of Genocide Scholars, says many Turks refuse to use the word 'genocide.'

"I worked with some Turkish scholars and these are people who would be considered liberals and so on - but even they really kind of shy away from using the word 'genocide.' They will talk about massacres - you lay all of these things out and they say yeah, yeah, yeah, this happened, okay - well no, I don't want to use that word. So there is this emotional antipathy to pronouncing what people now almost jokingly call the 'G' word," he said.

Smith says Turkey's position is difficult to sustain. "Turkey's persistent denial and inability to face, or unwillingness to face up to its history is very disruptive in all kinds of ways - in terms of international relations, in terms of its own internal politics - and it also prevents it from really recognizing how do you deal with minorities," he said.

Recently the U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee passed a non-binding resolution recommending that President Barack Obama recognize the 1915 killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks as genocide.

Obama administration's position

The Obama administration opposed the resolution. After the measure passed, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the administration does not believe the full House of Representatives will or should vote on the resolution.

Turkey immediately recalled its ambassador to Ankara for consultations. And Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan indicated he might not attend a mid-April nuclear energy summit in Washington hosted by President Obama.

About 20 countries - including France, Canada, Russia, the Netherlands, Sweden - have recognized the Armenian massacre as genocide.

"What's startling is that two important countries have not recognized it - the United States, repeatedly, because of its alliance with Turkey, its strategic interest in the region, its need for Turkey as a NATO ally, in its war against Iraq, has not recognized it. And secondly Israel, even though itself, its people originally suffered a great holocaust - the great genocide of World War II - has not recognized it, again for strategic reasons, its connection with Turkey." said Ronald Suny with the University of Chicago.

Suny and others point out that President Obama has changed his position. "Every presidential candidate, including President Obama, when they were campaigning, stated declaratively, clearly, fervently that they would recognize the genocide. Once they take power, of course, then these strategic security interests come into play and historical decisions, the historical truths have to be put aside. It's sad, but that's the case," he said.

Many experts say the resolution by the House Foreign Affairs Committee puts President Obama in an awkward position. But many analysts also say that may be a temporary situation, because they don't expect the measure to be taken up by the full House of Representatives.

http://media.voanews.com/images/Turkey+Curious+Map.jpgThe mass killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks beginning in 1915 remains an emotional issue. A major U.S. congressional panel has described the massacre as genocide. In this report from Washington, Senior Correspondent André de Nesnera looks at the ramifications of the congressional action for the Obama administration.
A majority of scholars and historians agree that the massacre of an estimated one million Armenians during World War I constitutes genocide as defined by the 1948 United Nations Convention on Genocide. The text defines genocide as the intentional killing of all or part of a designated people defined by their faith, their race, their ethnicity or their nationality.

However as Ronald Suny with the University of Chicago explains, the Turkish government has a diametrically opposed view.
"Turkey rejects the notion of genocide - actually the word or the term 'genocide.' They have acknowledged that there were deportations - there is no question about that - and that there were massacres and killings. What they deny is that the massacres and killings were intentionally organized and carried out by the government - and that the killings were anything more than collateral damage," he said.
housands of protesters rolled through the Thai capital Bangkok Saturday in trucks, cars, buses and on motorcycles to recruit supporters in their campaign against the government.

A supporter of ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, left, touches hands with passing motorcyclists during an anti-government demonstration in Bangkok, 20 Mar 2010The so-called "Red Shirts" plan to follow up their day-long caravan with a "blood painting" on Sunday, the latest tactic in their week-long effort to oust the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

Leaders of the anti-government movement on Friday rejected the prime minister's repeated offer for talks.

The Red Shirts said they will not enter into negotiations until the prime minister meets their conditions.  They are demanding that he dissolve the country's parliament and call elections.

Many of the protesters are from poor, rural Thailand and support former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.  He was ousted by a 2006 military coup because of alleged corruption.

Pro-democracy activists who oppose the army's role in government also have joined the rallies.

They say the Abhisit government came to power illegitimately with the military's support, after court rulings dismissed two Thaksin-allied governments.

Mr. Abhisit, who has the support of Thailand's royalists and urban elite, is refusing to call new elections.

Mr. Thaksin is living in self-imposed exile, avoiding a two-year prison sentence for graft in Thailand.

Police in Montenegro said Wednesday that Mr. Thaksin arrived in the Balkan state from Dubai on Saturday.  Authorities said he has Montenegrin citizenship, and that they have no legal reason to take action against him.

"We are nearly finished with the START treaty. I mean, as we are speaking today in Moscow, our negotiators in Geneva are wrapping-up the final elements of the START treaty and we hope to have a signing ceremony between President Medvedev and President Obama in early April," Clinton told the Bloomberg TV in an interview yesterday.

"But we don't have anything to say specifically about it until it is all completed. Missile defense is an issue that we are committed to," she said.
http://www.treehugger.com/amtral-celebrates-national-train-day.jpgKolkata, Mar 20 (PTI) In a major goof-up, an advertisement inserted in newspapers by the Eastern Railway showed Delhi in Pakistan and Kolkata in the Bay of Bengal.

The advertisement was to announces inauguration of luxury tourist train 'Maharaja's Express' by Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee from here.

A small box inside the advertisement panel showed the train route from Kolkata to Delhi via Gaya, Varanasi, Bandhabgarh, Khajuraho, Agra and Gwalior.

As the faint background of the outline of a small map of India showed Kolkata in the Bay of Bengal and Delhi in Pakistan, ER Chief Public Relations Officer Samir Goswami said, "It is a great mistake. We apologise for this. The advertising agency has been suspended."

When contacted, owner of the advertising agency said the route alignment had been given for the benefit of passengers.

"The map and the alignment are an artist's impression and not to scale.
